The film mixes big comedy stars with young talent. Each of the four misfits gets a clear role in the quest, and Steve ties them all together. Here is who plays whom.
- Jack Black as Steve. He plays the expert crafter who has lived in the Overworld for years. Black brings his usual loud comedy energy to the role.
- Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. He plays a washed-up video game champion with more confidence than skill. Momoa leans fully into the comedy.
- Emma Myers as Natalie. She plays one of the four misfits pulled through the portal.
- Danielle Brooks as Dawn. She plays another member of the group, and she returns for the sequel as well.
- Sebastian Hansen as Henry. He plays the youngest of the misfits. Henry’s creativity becomes key to the group’s survival.
- Jennifer Coolidge in a comic supporting role. She steals scenes the way only she can.

The Story So Far
The story starts in the real world. Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn are four misfits dealing with ordinary problems. Then a mysterious portal opens and pulls them into the Overworld. Everything there is made of cubes, and imagination is the most powerful tool of all.
To return home, the group must learn to craft, build, and survive. Piglins and zombies stand in their way. Their guide is Steve, an expert crafter who knows the Overworld’s rules. The adventure forces each of them to get bold and creative, which turns out to be exactly what they need back in the real world.
The film’s most famous moment is the Chicken Jockey scene. Steve spots a baby zombie riding a chicken and yells “Chicken Jockey!” at the top of his lungs. The line sparked a massive theater trend, with young fans shouting it back at the screen. Clips of the chaos spread across TikTok and turned the film into a true cultural event.

Mojang is also running a fan build challenge tied to the sequel. Fans build on a special challenge map, finalists earn early screenings, and one winning build appears in the film’s end credits.
