Minecraft End dimension — Ender Dragon, obsidian pillars and End city

Minecraft End Dimension Guide: Strongholds, the Ender Dragon and Elytra

The End is Minecraft’s final dimension — a floating archipelago in an endless void, ruled by the Ender Dragon. Reaching it is the closest thing the game has to a main quest: find a

stronghold, light the portal, slay the dragon, and claim the elytra wings that change how you travel forever. This guide walks you through every step, from your first Eye of Ender to raiding End cities.

The End is a dimension of pale-yellow floating islands suspended over a bottomless void. The central island holds obsidian pillars topped with end crystals and the exit portal; beyond it, hundreds of smaller outer islands drift in the darkness, home to End cities, chorus plants, and shulkers.

The rules here are stark: there is no day-night cycle, no weather, and falling into the void means losing everything — no lava to swim in, no ground to land on. Water works normally (unlike the Nether), beds explode (like the Nether), and the only native mobs are endermen — thousands of them.

The End is widely treated as the game’s finale. Defeating the Ender Dragon triggers the credits and opens the oute

r islands, where the elytra — wearable wings that let you glide — waits. If the

Nether guide was your midterm exam, the End is the final.

Progression Tip

You can visit the End in any order, but the intended progression is Overworld gear → Nether resources (blaze rods for Eyes of Ender) → End. Skipping straight to the End undergeared is technically possible and almost always fatal.

Strongholds are underground maze structures that house the End portal. You find them with Eyes of Ender:

  1. Craft Eyes of Ender. Combine an ender pearl (dropped by endermen) with blaze powder (from blaze rods, which come from Nether fortress blazes). Each eye is one pearl + one powder.
  2. Throw an eye. Right-click to toss it — it flies a short distance toward the nearest stronghold, then drops (sometimes shattering). Follow the direction it flew.
  3. Triangulate. Throw another eye every few hundred blocks. When eyes start flying downward or circling back, you’re close — the stronghold is beneath you.
  4. Dig down carefully. Strongholds sit deep underground. Dig a staircase, not a straight shaft, and listen for the sounds of the stronghold’s ambient mobs.

Bring at least 12 eyes for the portal itself plus a dozen extras for the search — eyes shatter about 20% of the time when thrown. Endermen are the bottleneck: hunt them at night in the Overworld (wearing a carved pumpkin

prevents their aggression when you look at them), as detailed in our hostile mobs guide.

Searching/triangulation10-15 eyes recommended

Inside the stronghold, find the portal room: a small chamber with a 3×3 frame of portal blocks, some already holding Eyes of Ender. Place an Eye of Ender in each empty frame block. When the twelfth eye slots in, the portal ignites with a starry black surface.

  • Strongholds are mazes — libraries, prison cells, staircases, and dead ends. Mark your path with torches on one side only (always on the right, for example) so you can backtrack.
  • Silverfish infest some stronghold blocks. They pop out when you mine infested stone — annoying, not deadly, but don’t ignore a swarm.
  • The portal room sometimes generates with missing frame blocks in older world generation — in modern versions it always generates complete. If a frame block is missing, the portal can’t be lit in that stronghold (rare; find another).

Step through, and you’re in the End — usually

on a small obsidian platform floating in the vo

d. Bridge to the main island immediately; don’t linger.

Enchant everything first — the enchanting table guide covers the setup. Slow Falling potions deserve special mention: the dragon’s wing buffet launches you skyward, and without Slow Falling you fall into the void. Brew them from phantom membranes before you go.

Leave valuables at home: your first dragon attempt might fail, and the End void keeps no inventory.

The fight has two phases — crystals first, dragon second.

Phase 1: Destroy the end crystals. Ten obsidian pillars hold healing crystals that regenerate the dragon. Shoot each crystal with your bow — they explode, so don’t stand close. Some pillars have iron-bar cages around their crystals: shoot through the gaps, or pillar up and break the cage (risky), or use a well-aimed arrow through the bars. Destroy ALL crystals before focusing the dragon, or it out-heals your damage.

Phase 2: Damage the dragon. The dragon circles, strafes with fireballs, and periodically perches on the exit portal. When it perches, sprint in and hit its head — the head takes the most damage. Beds deal enormous damage if placed and triggered as the dragon approaches (they explode in the End), but mistime it and you die instead. When it takes off, back away: the wing buffet launches you, and dragon’s breath leaves lingering purple clouds that melt your health.

Dragon Fight Warning

The #1 cause of death in the dragon fight isn’t the dragon — it’s the void. Endermen knockback, dragon breath panic-sprinting, and crystal explosions near island edges all end the same way. Fight from the island’s center, keep Slow Falling active, and never sprint near an edge.

When the dragon dies, it explodes in a shower of experience (enough for roughly 60+ levels) and a dragon egg appears on the exit portal. Jump into the portal for the credits — you’ve beaten Minecraft’s final boss. The egg is a

trophy; collect it with a piston or torch trick if you want it displayed at home.

Killing the dragon unlocks the real endgame. A new portal appears at the island’s edge — throw an ender pearl through it to reach the outer islands.

End cities are tall purpur-block towers on the outer islands. Inside: loot chests with diamond gear, enchanted items, and beetroot seeds — and shulkers, box-like mobs whose projectiles levitate you into the sky. Their Levitation effect is dangerous near void edges; carry milk to clear it, and kill shulkers with a sword when their shell opens.

End ships float beside some cities. Board one for the ultimate prize: the elytra, wings found in an item frame in the ship’s treasure room. Equip them in the chestplate slot and glide anywhere — with firework rockets, you can fly indefinitely. The elytra single-handedly changes how you explore, build, and travel.

Also gather chorus fruit — the End’s purple plants drop fruit that teleports you randomly when eaten (a chaotic escape tool) and chorus flowers for farming more. And don’t miss the dragon head on the ship’s bow: a trophy that opens and closes its jaw with redstone.

Elytra Care Tip

Elytra have limited durability and can’t be crafted — only repaired with phantom membranes on an anvil, or with Mending. Treat your first pair like the treasure it is, and always carry rockets, not just the wings.

Exploring the outer islands is pure profit with almost no risk once the cities are cleared — bridge between islands, loot, and return through the gateway. Many players on Java Edition and Bedrock Edition alike call this the most relaxing part of the game.

Twelve to fill the portal frame, plus 10-15 for finding the stronghold (thrown eyes can shatter). Bring at least 25 total to be comfortable.

Yes. Place four end crystals (crafted from glass, ghast tears, and Eyes of Ender) on the exit portal’s edges to resummon the dragon. Farmers use this to grind dragon’s breath and experience.

You die and lose your items — there’s no recovery. The void deals damage that bypasses armor and most protections. Slow Falling potions and careful bridging are your only real defenses.

Yes — the elytra exists in both Java and Bedrock Editions, found the same way in End ships. Flight controls differ slightly between PC and mobile, but the item works identically.

You can carry one, but sleeping in it makes it explode — which players weaponize against the dragon. Never sleep in the End expecting to set your spawn.

Only if you look directly at their face or attack them first. A carved pumpkin on your head lets you look around freely. Thousands of endermen spawn on the main island, so the pumpkin trick (or careful camera discipline) is essential.
